Let’s start our whirlwind tour of the new media landscape with the elephant in the room, HTML5. Despite the hoopla, this standard is far from standard. The spec won’t be finalized until 2013 and browser support is uneven, to say the least. As Jan Ozer succinctly put it, Enough With HTML5 Already. Flash is still the most sensible platform for video delivery to the desktop today, though of course iOS devices do require HTML5. So for the foreseeable future, we’re living in a dual world where there is really no choice but to support both platforms.
Life is a choice. Or actually, a series of choices. From the moment you woke up today, you made hundreds – probably thousands – of decisions, some small, some big, that will shape the way your day turns out… and that will influence, in some way, every day that follows.
So it’s worth thinking about how we make those decisions, and how we can help others make better decisions.
Sunday, June 26 — I wake up early and roll over. The sun is coming up. Rebecca is still asleep and Graham too, who had crawled into bed in the middle of the night. I look at my hands, touch my face, feel my legs. This could have been a very different morning.
It is the night before, and 10 minutes earlier we had left the kids with the sitter to go out to dinner in West Chester. There is a fast way to get there, and a nice way to get there. We chose the nice way — a meandering trip along Rt. 100, following the Brandywine River. We were in no hurry, and it had been a while since just the two of us had gotten out.
My son Graham turns four next month and if there is one thing I can say for sure about him, he is crazy about trains. In particular, Thomas the Train. Crazy, maybe, to the point of obsession.
He watches Thomas every morning on Sprout. He goes to bed every night watching Thomas on YouTube. We own a dozen or so Thomas DVDs, each of which he’s watched probably twenty times. We’ve gone for a ride on the “real” Thomas in Strasburg and driven to Six Flags in Bowie, Maryland to visit Thomas Town and we’ve gone to Thomas the Musical. His Thomas train set has taken over the entire playroom and includes all his favorite engines – Thomas, Percy, Emily, Diesel 10, Hiro, Molly, Rusty, Salty, Spencer, Victor and I’m probably forgetting a few. He has Thomas books, Thomas iPad apps, Thomas sippy cups, Thomas placemats, Thomas pajamas and Thomas underwear.
